What Is Workplace Flexibility?

The expectation that employees will complete their assigned goals or activities in their preferred manner rather than within set working hours is known as work flexibility or workplace flexibility. The how, when, and where of work are all up to the employee. The work method must, however, be in line with company objectives.(Ranjhaa, 2022)

Flexibility in the workplace is based on employers' knowledge of how people behave. Employers who implement flexible work policies believe that in order for employees to be successful and motivated on both a personal and professional level, flexible work policies must be implemented. However, adhering to a rigid or prescribed schedule can undermine their efficacy. As a result, they prefer to have workers set their own working hours as long as they perform tasks promptly and correctly.(Ranjhaa, 2022)

Types of flexible work arrangements

(Ong, 2019)

various forms of flexible employment Depending on where the flexibility element is situated, there may be many sorts of flexible work arrangements. Flexibility may be permitted, for example, with regard to working hours or the location of the workplace.

1. Flexibility
Employees can set their own schedules and work hours under the flextime model. They are free to choose the hours they work as long as they meet their weekly hourly quota, which for full-time jobs is typically 40 hours.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

For jobs where time zones don't matter, the flextime paradigm is typical (jobs with no customer contact like designers, content writers, etc.). Thus, in this instance, the employee will report for work for 40 hours each week on a schedule that works for them. They can want to work some hours at midday and the remaining after midnight rather than from 9 to 5. As long as the task is completed, it doesn't matter.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

2. Remote job
The 2020 epidemic opened our eyes to the benefits of remote employment, if we hadn't before. When companies had no choice but to allow their employees to work from home, we learned that we weren't paying for seat warmers but for a job well done.

Are you still unsure about the productivity of your remote employees? Imagine if businesses like Twitter always permitted their staff to work from home if they wanted toitter always permitted their staff to work from home if they wanted to. Furthermore, employees have the option to work remotely from anywhere, so remote employment is not always equivalent to working from home.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

3. A shorter workweek
Another sort of work arrangement that may be appropriate for some job profiles is a compressed work schedule. In plain English, a compressed workweek involves working long hours on some days and taking more days off on others.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

For instance, you could work 10 hours, 4 days a week, as opposed to 8 hours, 5 days a week. After that, you can take one additional day off, giving you three straight days off (including the weekend).

4. Job sharing
Job sharing is a notion that is advantageous to both businesses and employees. A part-time worker who is unable to work 40 hours per week can essentially "share their employment" with that person. Consequently, there will be two employees working part-time rather than one full-time.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

Companies that work with remote freelancing teams frequently engage in job sharing. By definition, it's very comparable to working multiple part-time jobs rather than devoting your entire time to one business.(8 Benefits of Flexible Work Arrangements | Empuls, 2021)

    1. Once they have worked for their company for at least 26 days, all employees (whether or not they have children) have the legal right to seek flexible working. At first look, having the flexibility to work may seem like the solution to the problem of work/life balance, with no obvious drawbacks.

    1. Working remotely offers the same benefits and drawbacks as working in an office. It takes self-awareness to perform well from a distance. You must understand your tendencies, limitations, and potential. Each person should approach this method of work in their own way and form their own routines. A hybrid job, which involves working both stationary and remotely, could be a suitable solution.  Both onsite and remote employment have advantages and disadvantages. However, the benefits of working from home show that you shouldn't be concerned about it at all. Everything hinges on how we proceed.thank you Nandun
